From marketing to manufacturing, culture shapes every aspect of business. This is no less true of innovation, innovation experts agree that truly innovative companies arise from and are fed by a culture of innovation. The wider culture--national, regional, or even local -- also plays a central role in creating and sustaining innovation. Western innovators are always hunting for the next promising model. Their next hunting grounds will likely be emerging markets in Asia, Africa and Sout America. The rising innovation power of emerging markets will bring a different set of cultural models to the attention of Western innovators. As the world of innovation expands to include ever more remote physical, intellectual, and philosophical geographies, there will doubtless be other trendy innovation models with exotic pedigrees. The engine of innovation is powered by cultures that favor ambition, adaptability, and creativity. The wider culture--national, regional, or even local also plays a central role in creating and sustaining innovation. Just-in-time inventory management may have originated with Toyota, but it arose from an entire complex of supply chain and quality assurance innovations that emerged from Japans large corporations.
