An Empirical Study on StratifiedEnglishTeachingin a Shenzhen JuniorHigh School Abstract Stratification, anew application of a teaching mode intothepedagogy,emerged in 1868. It is one sort of individualized teaching, which better solved the obstacles of ignoring the differentiation among students. The stratified teaching has been obtained since it was brought in China in 1990s and applied in English class.Nevertheless,amongtheprevious studies,the author foundthat there existed different conclusions,includingtheprosand cons.Therefore,thisresearch wascarried out in order to give a sparkling perspective of the empirical study. Based on the scientific theories and the previous studies, the focus of this research is to explore whether stratified teaching model can play a more effective role in enhancingjunior high school students’tests performance,shorteningthediscrepancy and stimulatingthelearning interest. The research was carried out in ajunior high school in Shenzhen from September 2017 to January 2018 in Grade Seven. The author took Class Two and Class Four as the research subjects. The students in Class 2 (EC) were stratified into two levels according to their entrance test. Then, in the implementation process, the teaching goals, the teaching content, the assignments and assessment were also stratified into two levels based on students’ abilities. In order to explore the effectiveness, three research instruments were adopted to collect data including tests, questionnaires and interviews.After a one-semester experiment, through analyzing the data, it was found that the stratified teaching ismore effective in improving the students’ test performance than the common teaching. It is also found that the stratified teaching is effective in shortening the discrepancy between the high-level students and the low-level students. In addition, it is found that the stra
