They both describe the touching stories about the talented scholars and lovely ladies who know each other and love each other. They are both excellent works which reflect the pursuit of free love between young men and women in feudal society and object to the bondage of feudalism. Although the two works are on the same theme of love and play a decisive role in the literary world, there are similarities and differences in the emphasis of the theme, the portraying of the characters and the form of the performance. In the description of theme, The Romance of West Chamber focuses on the counter-argument with emotion, while Peony Pavilion focuses on resisting reason with emotion. In the shaping of characters, Cui Yingyings character is a little more passive than Du Liniang on the road of pursuing love. At the same time, Du Liniang is inferior to Cui Yingying in his attitude towards fame and fortune. In the form of his works, “The Romance of West Chamber”adopts realism and “Peony Pavilion” adopts romanticism.
