Nowadays there is an excellent opportunity to increase the individual benefits of these two areas by combining them in a proper manner. The Spanish co-funded project CO2perautoS2, running in its first stage from January 2013 to mid 2015, explores, among other objectives, the capabilities of the cooperative technologies to improve and extend automated driving functions and their performances. This paper analyses technical challenges and requirements for cooperative automated driving and presents the main results of CO2perautoS2 project, showing some examples of future cooperative automated driving functions. Additionally the potential next steps are also outlined.
