Over the last 50 years, the world has become a global village. Events in far-flung places - from China, from Iraq, from Latin America - are presented to Americans every evening on the nightly news. Domestic events of crucial importance from political debates to health - care issues are carried over the public airwaves. In this sense, television serves to inform and educate Americans. However, there’s a dark side to TV watching, especially when it comes to considering its effects on this nation’s youth. Consequently, TV in America tends to be a two-edged sword. Television’s positive effect are exemplified by the Civil Rights movement in the 1960’s, while television’s negative effects are illustrated by behavior problems associated with childhood development. When it comes to race relations, television’s effects are largely positive. Television’s coverage of the Civil Rights movement in the South, for example, left an indelible image on the mind of many Americans. Shots of black protesters such as Martin Luther King and Jessie Jackson being “ hosed down” by white rednecks emphasized and made vivid the racial inequalities that permeated American culture at the time. More recently, TV shows, such as (= involving, including)the “Cosby Show” and “In Living Color” ,have helped to bring black culture into the mainstream and mitigate racial prejudice by making Americans more receptive to diverse viewpoints. On the negative side, however, TV exposes the younger generation to images of violence and mayhem on a daily basis. It’s been estimated that children are inundated with up to 157 acts of violence for every six hours of TV views. Moreover, Norman Mailer has written that the constant bombardment of commercials disrupts the narrative flow of public TV programs, producing a generation of young adults with short attention span and limited ability to concentrate.
