Tasks:
1. Identify the critical issues facing the organization (from management’s perspective).
a. Review the past performance (financial, market, etc.) of the Company.
b. Review the current business environment (high-level internal and external issues).
c. Identify the Company’s key past successes and the reasons why it has been successful.
d. Identify the Company’s key past failures and how they impacted/changed the direction of the Company.
2. Define the current mission/vision.
a. Review any literature describing the current mission/vision.
b. Discuss the mission/vision with key individuals within the organization to clearly define its meaning.
c. Learn the history of the current mission/vision’s creation. (i.e., who composed, etc.)
d. Identify and reconcile any inconsistencies in the meaning behind the mission/vision.
e. Determine how the mission/vision has evolved over time based on the information from task #1.
3. Define the current strategy.
a. Interview key members of management to define all dimensions of the current strategy.
b. Define the process used to develop the strategy, including the inputs used to develop and evaluate alternate strategies.
c. Identify the transformation of the Company’s strategy over time and compare them to the issues, successes and failures identified in step #1.
d. Determine the degree to which the Company follows/adheres to the current strategy.
