Now that Mike has walked you through the team structure and roles, we are going to move into exercises to help us be much more effective in dealing with each other and with the people who are currently involved in the process. To give you some background on where I am coming from with this, I have been working with a group called The Learning Circle. The Learning Circle is affiliated with MIT and with Peter Senge, the author of The Fifth Discipline. How many of you are familiar with this book?
The Fifth Discipline is about creating learning organizations. The premise is that, in the new economy, the organizations that win will be those organizations that can learn the fastest. And learning doesnt mean acquiring knowledge. It means enhancing the organizations capacity to act. So what we are going to focus on today is enhancing our teams capacity to act.
We will be working today with two of the five disciplines: team learning and mental models. Part of what these two disciplines involve is changing the way we communicate with one another in order to enhance our capacity to learn and to act. I wish we could spend about two weeks on these disciplines, but what we will do today is introduce you to a few tools which I believe will be extremely important to you on this project, but which will also be very useful to you in your personal lives.
The first thing we want to do is called the left hand column exercise. The purpose of this exercise is to make us more aware of the unstated conversations that typically occur in our heads and learn how to candidly make explicit to others what we are thinking. The reason this is important, I believe, is that it is often the things that go unsaid that end up as impediment
