5.1 Plot Structure

The five basic elements of fiction writing
The classical example on plot
(1)The king died, and then the queen died.
(2)The king died, and then the queen died of grief.
• The second sentence has a plot.
Plot
A story is a record on what happens, most of the time, chronologically.
Plot refers to the sequence of events inside a story which affect other events through
the principle of cause and effect.

• Henry James definition in “Arts of Fiction”: Plot is characters under stress.
•When characters are under stress, there is a development of the character’s psychology. ( plot is a
progress.)
• Jessica. P. Morrell says in her book:
“I would like to add that plot is movement and a record of change. These changes—inflicted on
the protagonist or a group of characters—alter their fortunes, choices, and beliefs.”

Plot
• This movement or the progress can be divided into three stages:
BEGINNING: set up the frame of plot, giving an introduction of the characters, setting, and the
conflicting forces.
