West Lake (西湖)
The West Lake came from a shallow bay in ancient times where Qiantang River ran into the sea. It was formerly n amed as Wuli n Waters, Golde n Buffalo Lake, Qiantang Lake and Xizi Lake. As it lies in the west of Han gzhou, it was later n amed the West Lake.
It covers an area of 6.38KM2, the average depth being 2.27M and the deepest being 5M.
It has mountains on three sides and the city on the remaining one side. The lake and mountain are magnificent.
Centered on the West Lake, the West Lake Seenic Area is a national scenic area with a
total area of 59KM2. There are over 60 cultural relic sites of state, provincial and mun icipal levels and over 100 attract ions. Among them, the most classic is the Ten Scenes and the New Ten Scenes at the West Lake.
Leife ng Pagoda (雷峰塔)
Leife ng Pagoda is a five story tall tower with eight sides, located on Sun set Hill south of
the West Lake in Hangzhou. Originally constructed in the year AD 975, it collapsed in 1924 but was rebuilt in 2002, since whe n it has bee n a popular tourist attract ion. Leife ng
Pagoda was one of the ten sights of the West Lake because of the Lege nd of the White Sn ake.
The original pagoda was built in 975 AD, during Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period,
at the order of King Qian Chu (bor n Qian Hon gchu) of Wuyue. It was built to celebrate
the birth of Qian Chus son, born to his Huang Fei. The Leife ng Pagoda was an octag on al,
five-story structure built of brick and wood and with a base built out of bricks.
During the Ming dynasty, Japanese pirates attacked Hangzhou. Suspecting the pagoda contained weap ons, they bur ned its woode n eleme nts, leav ing only the brick skelet on, as can be see n from Ming paintings of the West Lake. On the after noon of September 25,
1924, the pagoda fin ally collapsed due to disrepair.
There was a mausoleum below. On March 11, 2001 the mausoleum was excavated and many treasures were found, most no tably a gold and silver coated hair of the Buddha.
