STANLEY  Air Tools The Five Steps to Delegati on and Peace of Mind The best leadership style depends upon the situation. The skills of each person are a significant part of each situation. For example, the more experieneed a person is, the less the leader has to tell that person what to do and the more the leader can delegate. Here is how it works. Note: Staff ca n refer to a subord in ate or a team member assig ned to a project. Leader refers to a ma nager, supervisor, project leader or assig nment leader. The process is the same regardless of formal authority/positi on. Step One - Instruct New and inexperieneed staff need to be told what to do. The leader needs to give them instructions. The leader decides how the job will be done and tells the member of staff what is expected and how to achieve it. The style does not have to be cold or unfriendly. It should aim to help the member of staff do a good job and succeed. The best thing to do with a new member of staff is to get them going. Give them someth ing useful to do and to tell them exactly how. Staff at this level are said be to be not ready . Step Two - Teach After a while, a new pers on will become more con fide nt and want to know a bit more. They n eed to know not only what to do but also why. The effective leader recog ni zes this and beg ins to spe nd time teach ing. The leader still controls the work and still gives instructions. However, he or she also concentrates on helping the staff member learn. The leader seeks to get people to try small parts of the job for themselves. There is no thi ng like hav ing a go un der con trolled con diti ons, to help people lear n. Staff at this level are said to be ready to liste n Step Three - Invo Ive Once staff have bee n taught the basics, the effective leader seeks to in volve them in decisi ons.
