Consolidating Your Skills Passive Voice In some circumstances active voice and passive voice can express the same meaning. e.g. We shall appreciate your early reply. Your early reply will be appreciated. But more often, they are of different styles and tones. With the agent (the person who does the action) as the subject, active voice is more direct, dynamic, personal and forceful. In contrast, passive voice is more indirect, objective, and formal. Passive voice is frequently used in business English: when the agent is unknown or unimportant; (e.g. The waterproof lining was badly torn. ) when the action is more important than the agent; (e.g. the goods must be attractively packed.) to be more polite or formal.
