* * * * * * * * * * The above screenshot shows an example of how snapshots appear to Windows based users. The screen shows a view of a user’s home directory using the Windows Explorer. The top two Windows show the home directory and an “exploded” view of a subdirectory residing under the home directory. As can be seen in the Window at the top of the screen, the home directory also contains the “special” ~snapshot subdirectory underneath which the snapshots can be viewed and accessed. The lower three windows show a view into the Filer’s snapshot environment through the ~snapshot directory. The leftmost of these windows shows the contents of the ~snapshot directory itself. Within this directory are subdirectories that contain the various snapshots that are available. NetApp Filers can maintain multiple snapshots of differing ages concurrently. Intraday snapshots are available under the hourly.* directories. Daily and weekly snapshots are also available under directories called nightly.* and weekly.*. The exact time at which each these different kinds of snapshots are taken is configurable by the system administrator. The rightmost two windows at the bottom of the screen show a breakout of the most recent intraday snapshot taken (hourly.0). In this case, an exact replica of the users home directory can be viewed within this snapshot. If the user had added or deleted any files since this snapshot was taken, the view of the home directory shown at the top and bottom of the screen. While in this example the user does not appear to have recently created or deleted any files, it is possible that some of these files were modified since the snapshot was taken, hence the versions available in the snapshot may not have the same contents as those in the active file system.
