Boardworks Ltd 2015 Angular displacement and velocity Angular displacement and angular velocity, like linear displacement and linear velocity, are vector quantities, i.e. quantities with a direction. Displacement, x, is a distance with a direction. Linear velocity, v, is a speed with direction. It is the rate of change of displacement with time. v = Δx Δt Angular displacement, Δθ, is the angle moved through relative to a specific axis. Angular velocity, ω, is the rate of change of angular displacement with time. ω = Δθ Δt The units of ω are rad s–1. Period of circular motion The distance covered by an object moving in a circle in one period is the circumference of the circle, 2πr. An equation for v speed = distance time v = 2πr T therefore v r An equation for ω The angle an object moving in a circle moves through in one period is 2π rad. ω = Δθ Δt therefore ω = 2π T 2π Equation linking v and ω Frequency, f, is the number of rotations per second. Frequency frequency = number of rotations time taken i.e. Because period = time taken number of rotations T = 1 f f = 1 T ω = 2πf Using ω = , this gives . 2π T and Matching equations Can you calculate v and ω? * ? They are included here for comparison with angular displacement and velocity. * ? Period = time for n rotations / n * ? Boardworks Ltd 2015 Boardworks A-level Physics Year 2 Circula
