The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is her first novel, which almost includes all the themes McCullers would involve in her later works. One of the themes is gender issue. Queer theory is a theory of sex and gender and sexuality, ranging from homosexuality to all sexual minorities. It holds the views that social gender and sexual orientation are both unstable and variable. Now many reaseaches focuse on the spiritual isolation, faith crisis, etc.. There are few people use queer theory to analyse the gender identity of the characters in this nvoel. Thus this thesis aims to interpret the gender identity of McCullers’s The Heart is a Lonely Hunter under the perspective of queer theory. With the help of queer theory, we can explore the gender problems the characters faced in the novel and discover how they identify their gender and how they struggle with the society. Introduction Carson McCullers(1917-1967) is regarded as one of the most important American writers of twentieth century, and she plays an important role in American Southern Literature. As a southern woman writer, she ranked with Catherine Anne Porter, Flannery O’Connor and Eudora Welty. She became well-known with the publication of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter when she was 23, and became a shiny star in southern literature of America.
