to
their

fired the gun, and the
race was on. The excitement
of

crowd waiting at the finish
line at the newly constructed

of
Athens’
ancient
stadium
was
beyond
description.

don
Louis,
a
Greek
postal
worker
crossed
the
finish
line
a
f
ull
seven
minutes
ahead
of
the
pack.
He
used 2
hours,
5
8
minutes,
and
50
seconds
for
the 40
kilometer
distance
(aver
age
pace
of
7:11
minutes
per
mile).
When
it
was
all
ove
r,
nine
runners
finished
the
run,
and
8
of
them
Greeks.
Th
e host
nation
was
ecstatic,
and
the
marathon
was
born.
