PAGE PAGE 23 Multimodal Discourse Analysis of E.E.Cummings’s Visual Poetry: A Case Study of Me up at does Abstract: E.E.Cummings, a famous American poet of the 20th century, is well-received for his unconventional experiments with words. This paper, based on the theory of Kress and Van Leeuwen’s multimodality and Halliday’s systematic functional grammar, presents a qualitative analysis of one of Cummings’s poems— Me up at does. This case study demonstrates the potential and the validity for researchers to apply the theory of multimodality to the analyses of visual poetry. The adoption of multimodal discourse analysis appears to be a good way to highlight the characteristics and the theme of visual poetry. Introduction 1.1 Research Objective Great quantities of studies have been conducted not only aboard but also in China to apply the theory of multimodal discourse analysis. Lots of scholars apply this theory to the analysis of advertisements, films, posters or other publicities. In the mean time, some researchers have been devoted to the field of language teaching, which have absolutely achieved certain achievements. On the other hand, great efforts have been made to lay stress on the grammatical variation and the phonetic variation of Cummings’s poems. When it comes to analyzing the poem with multimodal discourse analysis, few researches have been done.
