MethodsMice were given the aqueous and alcoholic extracts oraly, the total alkaloid and non-alkaloid parts, senkirkine (senkirkine-IG), respectively, and also intraperitoneal given senkirkine (senkirkine-IP), for 7 days. Hepatic injury effects were measured by experimental data of body weight, coefficient of liver, levels of GOT, GPT and TBIL in serum of mouse; histological examination of mouse liver was also carried out. ResultsThe total alkaloids, senkirkine IG or IP significantly inhibited the weight gain and increased the levels of GOT, GPT and TBIL in serum of mice; the senkirkine-IG and IP obviously increased the coefficient of liver. Compared with the control group, the results of histopathologic examination of the mouse liver showed that the live of mice took the aqueous extract were not injured, the ones took the total alkaloids were slightly injured, and the ones took senkirkine (IG and IP) were significantly injured. ConclusionThe aqueous extract of Flos Farfarae is not toxic to liver of mice at the experimental dose, but the total alkaloids and senkirkine are toxic to liver of mice.
