Methods: By using SP method of immunohistochemical technique, the expression of HIF1α and FHIT protein in 48 specime of esophageal squamous carcinoma tissue and its corresponding adjacent tissu were detected, and their relatiohip with clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed. Results: The positive expression inteity of HIF1α in esophageal squamous carcinoma tissue was remarkably stronger than that in its corresponding adjacent tissue (P),while the expression inteity of FHIT protein was weaker in esophageal squamous carcinoma tissue (P).There was negative correlation between the positive expression rate of HIF1α protein and that of FHIT protein in esophageal squamous carcinoma tissue(P，r=-). The expression of HIF1α and FHIT protein in esophageal squamous carcinoma tissue were correlated with the invasion depth (pTNM tumor stage) and lymph node metastasis (P)，and the expression of HIF1α was correlated with the differentiation of tumo (P)，but had no correlation with age and gender(P).Conclusio: The abnormal expressio of HIF1α and FHIT protein in esophageal squamous carcinoma tissue suggest that they probably play some roles in the origin and development of esophageal squamous carcinoma，and it reflects the differentiation and invasive potential of esophageal squamous carcinom tissues to same is significant correlation between the expression of HIF1α and determination of FHIT may help in
