A stereotype is any commonly known public belief about a certain social group or a type of individuals based on prior assumptions. Stereotypes lead to discrimination and prejudice, resulting in a lose-lose situation for those who hold stereotypes and those who are stereotyped.;This unit aims to raise your awareness of stereotypes so that you can be in a better position to avoid stereotyping and being stereotyped. Text A discusses some of the seven well-known and well-accepted stereotypes about the Japanese culture and society. In Text B, a second-generation Chinese American immigrant girl shares her frustrating experience of being stereotyped by the Americans.;1. About the Author Dr. David Matsumoto, is a renowned expert in the field of nonverbal behavior, gesture, microexpressions, culture and emotion.
