Much literary works is being introduced from foreign countries and translation serves as a link in the process. Among others， cultural default is a big challenge for translators and affects the quality of translation if inappropriately dealt with. This study makes a general classification of cultural default and introduces Relevance Theory as well as its principle. Tn relevance-theoretic view， translation is seen as an ostensive-inferential process of communication， in which the comprehension and interpretation of utterance depends on optimal relevance. Translators very task is to meet the intention of the writer with the expectation of the target reader， that is， to achieve optimal relevance. With Relevance Theory as its theoretical framework， this thesis proposes some practical translation strategies for cultural default elements with examples in Paz.
