ThenumberofoverweightchildrenintheUnitedStateshasmorethandoubledinthepast20 years.Beingseriouslyoverweightcanleadtohealthproblemslaterinlife.Asaresult,Arkansas firststartedtheBMIprogramin2004—publicschoolswererequiredtoprovideparentswithayearly reportoftheirchildren’sbody-massindex(BMI),anumbertoshowwhethertheirweightis appropriate(合适的).Alongwithstudents’BMIs,parentsalsoreceivedinformationonhealthrisks ofbeingoverweight. Astudyshowsthatobesity(肥胖)ratesinArkansashavestoppedincreasingsince2004.Butnot everyonesupportsschoolsinreportingstudents’BMIs.Someparentshavecomplainedtheirkids worrythattheyarebeing“graded”ontheirweight,althoughDr.JoeThompson,whohelpedplan theBMIprogram,gavetheexplanationatthestartoftheprogram,“Justlikeaschoolcheckfor visionorhearing,thisisawaytoraiseawareness(意识)aboutahealthrisk.” Criticsarguethattellingparentstheirchildrenweightoomuchcouldhurtchildren’s self-esteem(自尊).Somealsoquestionwhetherit’stheroleofschoolstomonitorstudents’weight. Dr.NancyKrebs,anutritionexpert,alsothinksobesityreportcardsaren’tgoodenough.“They’re makingkidsfeelbadabouthowtheyare,”shesays.“Insteadoffocusingonkids’BMIs,schools shouldprovidebetterhealthandphysicaleducationclassesandservehealthierfood.” However,supportersoftheprogramsayoverweightchildrenhavehadself-esteemproblemsbefore theirparentsgetobesityreportcards.Dr.KarenYoungatArkansasChildren’sHospitalsays,“The overweightkidsarebeingteased(被嘲弄).Itdoesn’ttaketheletterforthemtofeelbad.” HealthexpertsfromtheUniversityofArkansasthinkitwouldbeapitytostoptheBMIprogram.
