ABSTRACT William Shakespeare is the master of world literature in the history of world literature, and he is the famous litterateur, dramatist in the English Renaissance. His works consistently maintain one writing mode which breaks through original characters fates, and are featured with unique language features and styles. Shakespeare writes four great tragedies and four great comedies, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of the most famous four comedies which occupies a position of great importance both in the world dramas and the world literature. It has been adapted into a variety of films and television plays for many times, exerting a deep influences on later ages. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is full of lyric, romantic sentiment and strong artistic charming, its comedy effect is mainly reflected on language features and its humorous languages shape joyful atmosphere of drama. Besides, A Midsummer Night’s Dream applies a series of rhetorical devices to mold its language features and a variety of expression means to enrich and cascade its story plots, all which also reflect its artistic features. This thesis consists of four parts: the first part is the brief introductions of William Shakespeare and the brief introduction of his work A Midsummer Night’s Dream; the second part makes an analysis of this comedy’s language features in terms of the application of dialogue model, irony, equivoque, metaphor, contrast and parallel syntax in order; the third part mainly analyzes this comedy’s expression means, including the creation of ingenious plots, the using of the image of elves, the changing in time and apace as well as the setting of suspense; the last part makes a briefly conclusion of this thesis.
