Chinese Folk Motif Arts Lecture 2 Motif Arts : Modeling Methods and Aesthetic Significance Chinese folk motifs, with their unique modeling concept and visual thinking, have created a relatively independent modeling system. It demands us to analyze their modeling methods and aesthetic significance from the thoughts on and the concept of their motifs. Thus we can understand their artistic characteristic and individualities. This lecture is about two topics. The first topic is the modeling methods of folk motifs and we will focus on two distinguished ones. The second topic is their aesthetic significance, and we will choose some typical examples to elaborate it. I. The modeling methods of folk motifs The creators of folk motifs are farmers and craftsmen who do not receive any art education from any school or art academy. Their skills and modeling methods are passed down generation after generation and accumulated in daily life. Therefore their modeling methods inherit the characteristics of Chinese native culture and build new traditions for later successors. 1. The modeling method that perceives the internal structure of an item Plastic arts represented by academic ones focus on the visible appearance and external structure of an item, rarely seeing through the appearance and perceiving its internal structure. A modeling method of Chinese folk motifs does not rigidly adhere to the appearance of an item, but try to combine both its appearance and internal structure in artistic creation. Therefore a unique modeling method is shaped. It is a modeling method that perceives the internal structure of a item.
