Chapter 1Introduction
1.1IntroductiontoTennysonand“TheLady of Shalott”
Alfred Tennyson was a famous Poet Laureate of the Victorian Era in England, and
was the most popular and distinctive poet of the time. T. S. Eliot wrote two papers, a
meticulous analysis of Tennyson’s work, confirming his preeminence in the English
poetictradition.“Tennyson’s craft is eulogized as ‘[t]he fairest art,/ The sweetest English
song’andasan idealtobeemulated andpursuedbyyoungmen inthemanner ofdisciples
following a master.” (Bloom, 2010: 18) He wrote a large number of poems during his
lifetime,and in hislater yearshe also devotedhimselftopoeticdrama.Hiswritingperiod
can beroughly divided into three stages,namely the early,the middle and the late.In the
earlyperiod,that is,beforetheageofforty,hemainly focused on writinglyricpoems.His
poems accurately reflect the dominant views and interests of his time, unmatched by
English-languagepoetsofany era.
