* RETARDER SELECTION SWITCH GAUGE The transmission selection solenoid is controlled by the selection switch on the dash. This solenoid valve switches between either transmission or rear brake retardation. When the top half of the selection button is depressed, this activated rear brake retardation. Depressing button half of the button activates transmission retardation. During normal operation the dash mounted transmission oil temperature gauge should read in the green zone. During transmission retarder operation oil temperature can enter the yellow `Retarder On` zone but should not enter the red zone. * RETARDER VALVE SCHEMATIC * TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL FILL A visual level indicator (sight glass) is mounted on the lower left side of the transmission main housing and provides a method of checking the oil level. COLD OIL LEVEL CHECK Before starting the engine check the sight glass. If oil is present in the sight glass the transmission has sufficient oil to permit safe starting of the engine. If no oil is present add sufficient oil to bring the level to top of sight glass. HOT OIL LEVEL CHECK Note: Observe the condition of the oil in the sight glass. Foaming or spurting may indicate a false level. A hot oil level check must be made to determine if there is sufficient oil for working operation of the transmission. Select neutral on the transmission range selector and start the engine. Operate the truck until the transmission reaches normal operating temperature (82-103 C). Idle the engine, apply the parking brake and block all road wheels. Check the sight glass. Oil should be visible in the glass but not over the top. Add or drain oil as necessary to bring level within these limits. Low oil can cause component damage. To much oil can cause overheating. OIL AND FILTER CHANGE After the first 150 hours of operating a new or rebuilt transmission the oil and filter should be changed. Oil and filter changes are recommended at 1000 hour intervals there after. NOTE;
