This phenomenon is commonly known as verb erosion, where English verbs gradually lose their precise meaning or become vague due to incorrect usage or translation. This study aims to investigate the causes, effects, and possible solutions to verb erosion among Chinese college students in English. Research questions: 1. How do Chinese college students perceive their proficiency in using English verbs? 2. What are the common causes of verb erosion among Chinese college students? 3. How does verb erosion affect Chinese college students communication and academic performance? 4. What strategies can be used to prevent or reduce verb erosion among Chinese college students? Literature review: Previous studies have shown that verb erosion is a common issue among non-native English speakers, especially among Chinese learners. Several causes of verb erosion have been identified, such as the influence of the Chinese language, limited exposure to authentic English input, and inadequate English instruction. In addition, verb erosion has been found to have negative effects on second language acquisition and communication, as it can lead to misunderstanding, confusion, and reduced confidence. Strategies for addressing verb erosion include incorporating authentic English input, providing explicit instruction on verb usage, and encouraging self-correction and feedback. Methodology: This study will use a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, interviews, and language assessments.
