Unit5Striving for financial health It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor. — Lucius Annaeus Seneca (Roman philosopher and statesman)读写教程 2 Section BReading skillsDetailed study of the textReading comprehensionCollocation新视野大学英语(第四版)读写教程 2 Section BUnderstanding denotation and connotationBoth denotation and connotation refer to the meanings of words. Denotation is the literal meaning of a word, the one we find in a dictionary. Connotation, on the other hand, is the implied meaning of a word, the one a word suggests to us, or what it makes us feel or think. For the word die, for example, the denotation is “stop living”. But in the sentence “Some die at 30 but are not buried until they’re 70”, the word die connotes “stop living spiritually” or “stop growing intellectually”.新视野大学英语(第四版)读写教程 2Reading skills Section BUnderstanding denotation and connotationTake the word storm in two respective sentences for another example: 1) According to the weather forecast, there will be a storm tonight; 2) What he said provoked a storm of debate. You can easily figure out that the meaning of the word storm in the first sentence is denotation, while its meaning in the second sentence is connotation, because one is the word’s meaning in a dictionary and the other is the word’s meaning from one’s mind. So connotation contains the implications and associations that a新视野大学英语(第四版)读写教程 2Reading skills Section BUnderstanding denotation and connotationword may carry, in contrast to its denotative meanings. The important thing is that you need to be aware of the context in which the words appear and their connotations. Generally speaking, the more you perceive the connotations of words, the better you understand what a writer wants you to feel or think. Read carefully the following sentences from Text A, and pay attention to the underlined words. These words have clear connotations as well as denotations.新视野大学英语(第四版)读写教程 2Reading skills Section BUnderst
