Multi-modal discourse analysis of English movie posters Abstract In the present study, the researcher has adopted a qualitative approach based upon 14 English movie posters and an interpretive approach by putting forward a comprehensive model for analyzing multimodalities of those movie posters. This thesis includes a detailed and insightful multimodal analysis of image discourse. In terms of the thesis itself, the study of those posters is mainly focused on their images and titles. Most of these English movie posters are posters of Oscar movies. The perspective of multimodal discourse holds that discourse analysis should not be confined to verbal level, and they must take other semiotic resources into consideration. Therefore, new theory and new requirement of practice are brought forth. This thesis aims to testily the feasibility of the new theory. Up to date, there are various researches on verbal communication, and a lot of academic reward has been achieved. However, the researches on nonverbal communication are seldom profound. MDA, which thrived in the 1990s, is an effective approach to analyze nonverbal modalities. In China, there is no study of MDA before the year 2003. So the theory of MDA is a comparatively new theory in the linguistic field. This thesis tends to analyze the MDA theory more deeply, and test the feasibility of MDA applied
