英语名词化在中国英语专业硕士生毕业论文中的体现的中期报告
Introduction
Noun phrase is the important component of the English language. It highlights the objects, people, and places that we refer to in our speech. However, when it comes to Mandarin speakers who have acquired English language, they often struggle with making sense of noun phrases in English. Due to this, they tend to overuse noun phrases while writing academic assignments, which may lead to reducing the readability of the text.
To solve this problem, this research aims to investigate the use of English noun phrases in the graduate thesis written by the Chinese students pursuing a Masters degree in English. Moreover, the research also intends to analyze how noun phrases contribute to academic writing in English.
Literature Review
Considering a language perspective, the noun phrase is the subordinate constituent with diversified sources in English. In the English language, the use of noun phrases allows the speaker or writer to convey more information about the material being discussed while conveying a complex and diverse perspective.
In his study, Gagne (2001) examined the use and exploitation of noun phrases in a corpus of both spoken and written texts of English native speakers. According to Gagne, the use of noun phrases in academic writing highlights the importance of the object, person, or place in terms of its theoretical and practical significance. Meanwhile, utilizing noun phrases in academic writing also provide clarity, completeness, and conciseness to the written text.
After analyzing 30 Japanese postgraduate essays, Takagi (2003) argued that the excessive overuse of noun phrases can lead to hefty and complicated writing, which may affect the coherence and readability of the piece. Therefore, he recommended a balance between nominal, verb-based, and prepositional phrasing to enhance coherence and readability.
