Antonio,aVenetianmerchant,complainstohisfriendsofamelancholythathecannotexplain.HisfriendBassanioisdesperatelyinneedofmoneytocourtPortia,awealthyheiresswholivesinthecityofBelmont.BassanioasksAntonioforaloaninordertotravelinstyletoPortia’sestate.

Antonioagrees,butisunabletomaketheloanhimselfbecausehisownmoneyisallinvestedinanumberoftradeshipsthatarestillatsea.AntoniosuggeststhatBassaniosecuretheloanfromoneofthecity’smoneylendersandnameAntonioastheloan’sguarantor.InBelmont,Portiaexpressessadnessoverthetermsofherfather’swill,whichstipulatesthatshemustmarrythemanwhocorrectlychoosesoneofthreecaskets.NoneofPortia’scurrentsuitorsaretoherliking,andsheandherlady-in-waiting,Nerissa,fondlyrememberavisitpaidsometimebeforebyBassanio.

InVenice,AntonioandBassanioapproachShylock,aJewishmoneylender,foraloan.Shylocknursesalong-standinggrudgeagainstAntonio,whohasmadeahabitofberatingShylockandotherJewsfortheirusury,thepracticeofloaningmoneyatexorbitantratesofinterest,andwhounderminestheirbusinessbyofferinginterest-freeloans.Although Antoniorefusestoapologizeforhisbehavior,ShylockactsagreeablyandofferstolendBassaniothreethousandducatswithnointerest.Shylockadds,however,thatshouldtheloangounpaid,ShylockwillbeentitledtoapoundofAntonio’sownflesh.DespiteBassanio’swarnings,Antonioagrees.InShylock’sownhousehold,hisservantLancelotdecidestoleaveShylock’sservicetoworkforBassanio,andShylock’sdaughterJessicaschemestoelopewithAntonio’sfriendLorenzo.Thatnight,thestreetsofVenicefillupwithrevelers,andJessicaescapeswithLorenzobydressingashispage.Afteranightofcelebration,BassanioandhisfriendGrazianoleaveforBelmont,whereBassaniointendstowinPortia’shand.
