Thebrakingsystemisthemostimportantsystemincars。Ifthebrakesfail，the

resultcanbedisastrous.Brakesareactuallyenergyconversiondevices，which

convertthekineticenergy(momentum)ofthevehicleintothermalenergy

（heat）.Whensteppingonthebrakes,thedrivercommandsastoppingforcetentimes

aspowerfulastheforcethatputsthecarinmotion.Thebrakingsystemcanexert

thousandsofpoundsofpressureoneachofthefourbrakes.

Twocompleteindependentbrakingsystemsareusedonthecar.Theyaretheservice

brakeandtheparkingbrake.

Theservicebrakeactstoslow，stop，orholdthevehicleduringnormaldriving。

Theyarefoot—operatedbythedriverdepressingandreleasingthebrakepedal。The

primarypurposeofthebrakeistoholdthevehiclestationarywhileitisunattended。

Theparkingbrakeismechanicallyoperatedbywhenaseparateparkingbrakefoot

pedalorhandleverisset.

Thebrakesystemiscomposedofthefollowingbasiccomponents：the“master

cylinder”whichislocatedunderthehood,andisdirectlyconnectedtothebrake

pedal，convertsdriverfoot’smechanicalpressureintohydraulicpressure。Steel

“brakelines”andflexible“brakehoses”connectthemastercylindertothe“slaveave
