INTRODUCTION

Thisflashpointtestmethodisadynamictestmethodanddependsonadefiniterateoftemperature

increasetocontroltheprecisionofthetestmethod.Therateofheatingmaynotinallcasesgivethe

precisionquotedinthetestmethodbecauseofthelowthermalconductivityofcertainmaterials.The

useofanequilibriummethodsuchasTestMethodsD3828,MethodBimprovesthepredictionof

flammabilityforsuchmaterials,asthevaporsabovethetestspecimenandthetestspecimenarecloser

tothermalequilibrium.

Flashpointvaluesareafunctionoftheapparatusdesign,theconditionoftheapparatusused,and

theoperationalprocedurecarriedout.Flashpointcanthereforeonlybedefinedintermsofastandard

testmethod,andnogeneralvalidcorrelationcanbeguaranteedbetweenresultsobtainedbydifferent

testmethodsorwithtestapparatusdifferentthanthatspecified.
