Twowavesarrivingatapointatthesametime.Iftheyarriveinphase-thatis,iftheircrestsarriveatexactlythesametime-theywillinterfereconstructively.

Ifthetwowavesarriveoutofphase-thatis,ifthepeaksofonewavearriveatthesametimeasthetroughsfromtheother-theywillinterferedestructively.

Principleofsuperpositionofwaves:Whentwoormorewavesmeetatapoint,theresultantdisplacementatthepointisequaltothesumofthedisplacementsoftheindividualwavesatthatpoint.

Ifthispathdifferenceisawholenumberofwavelength,thewavesarriveinphaseaninterfereconstructively,producingmaximumdisturbanceagain.However,atplacesthepathdifferenceisanoddnumberofhalf-wavelengths,theinterferenceisdestructive,producingaminimumresultantdisturbance.Thiscollectionofmaximaandminimaproducedbythesuperpositionofoverlappingwavesiscalledaninterferencepattern.
