superscriptepsilon()indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.

INTRODUCTION

Theconceptofcoordinatingthedimensionsofbuildingsandbuildingpartswiththedimensionsof

manufacturedcomponentsandassembliesbymeansofacommondimensionalfactor,ormodule,was

pioneeredintheUnitedStatesinthe1920sand1930s.Theterms“modularcoordination”and

“dimensionalcoordination”wereadoptedfortheuseofthebasicbuildingmoduleandpreferred

dimensionsinbuildingdesign,production,andconstruction.

In1939,theAmericanStandardsAssociation(nowANSI)organizedprojectA62,acooperative

studyofdimensionalcoordination,resultingintheissueofaseriesofstandardsconcerningthesubject

between1945and1971.ResponsibilityforthecontinuationoftheworkwastransferredtoASTMand

underthegeneralsupervisionofCommitteeE-6
