TheHuaMountain

ThesteepestsacredmountainincentralChina,theHuamountainislocated120kilometers(75miles)eastofthecityofXian.TraditionallycalledtheWestMountain,it

is

wellknownforsteeptrails,breath-takingcliffs,narrowpassages,andgrandsceneries.

Therearefivepeaks:theSouthpeak,alsocalledtheGoose-LandingPeak,isthehighestat2,160meters;theEastpeakisalsocalledtheSunrisePeak;theWestpeak-theLotusPeak;theNorthpeak-theCloudTerracePeak;andtheMiddlepeak-theJadeMaidPeak.Thewholemountainisahugemonolithicgranite.

ThetrailsthroughHuamountainareparticularlychallenging.Therearemorethan210narrowpathwaysplankedoverorchiseledincliffs,themostfamousbeing

the

SkyLadder,theGrayDragonPeak,theThousandStairs,theCloudsLadder.ThemostadventurousscenicspotsaretheSparrowHawkFlipping,andtheLongSkyPathway,whichareatthetopofcliffs.

Historically,theHuamountainhasbeenclosetotheearly

centersofChinesecivilization.LegendarykingsofChinasuchasHuangDi,Yao,andShunallpaidvisitstotheHua.DozensofemperorsoftheQin,Han,Tangdynastiesusedtoholdsacredritualshere.Forthousandsofyears,BuddhistandTaoistmonksandpilgrimshavetraveledhere,establishedmonasteries,andpractisedalchemyintheHua

mountain.Todaytherearemorethan20Taoistmonasteries,themostfamousbeingtheJadeSpringTempleandtheEastTaoTemple.

AvisittotheHuamountaintakestwodaysfromXian,andistrulyuniqueandworthwhileespeciallyifyouare

capable

physicallyandadventurousspiritually.FromthesupremesummitofHua,youcanseetheYellowRiverandthelandthatisthecradleofearlyChinesecivilization.Theview
