3Multi-annualAIworkplan2023-2028ClassifiedaspublicbytheEuropeanMedicinesAgencyIntroductionArtificialIntelligence(AI)systemsaregraduallybecomingadominanttoolsupportingintellectualworkandpoweringautomationacrossallwalksoflife.TheEuropeanmedicinesregulatorynetwork’s(EMRN)visiononAIisforaregulatorysystemharnessingthecapabilitiesofAIforpersonalproductivity,processautomationandsystemsefficiency,increasedinsightsintodataandstrengtheneddecision-supportforthebenefitofpublicandanimalhealth.TheincreasinglysophisticatednatureandthepaceofchangeofAIbringopportunitiesbutalsochallenges.TheapplicationofAIrequiresacollaborative,coordinatedstrategytomaximisethebenefitsfromAIwhileensuringthatuncertaintyisadequatelyexplored,andrisksaremitigated.ThisfirstversionoftheBDSGmulti-annualAIworkplanfocusesonfourcriticaldimensionstofacilitatethedevelopmentanduseofresponsibleandbeneficialAI.AItechnologyisfastevolving,asaretheethicalandpolicyaspectsrelatedtoit.AstheseevolvethisplanwillberegularlyupdatedundertheoversightoftheHMA-EMABigDataSteeringGroup.Throughouttheexecutionoftheworkplan,stakeholderswillbeconsulted,engagedandinformed.
