SichuanUniversityisactuallytheproductofaseriesofmergersinvolving3nationaluniversities:

theformerSichuanUniversity,theformerChengduUniversityofScienceandTechnology,andthe

TheformerSichuanUniversitybeganlifeastheSichuanChineseandWesternSchool,

establishedbyLuChuanlin,GovernorofSichuan,ontheordersofEmperorGuangXu.Itistheearliest

highereducationinstituteinsouthwestChina.TheformerChengduUniversityofScienceand

Technologywasoneoftheearliestmultidisciplinaryuniversitiesofengineeringtobeestablished

duringtherestructuringofcollegesanduniversities.TheformerWestChinaUniversityofMedical

SciencesoriginatedfromWestChinaUnionUniversitywhichwasestablishedbywesternChristian

groupsinChengduin1910.Itwasnotonlyoneofthefirstwestern-styleuniversities,butalsooneof

thefirstuniversitiestoofferpostgraduateprogramsinChina.
