新音乐

Thenewmusicwasbuiltoutofmaterialsalreadyinexistence:blues,rocknroll,folkmusic.Butalthough

perhaps,thaneventhenewmusiciansthemselvesyetrealize.Thetransformationtookplacein1966--1967.Upto

thattime,theblueshadbeenanessentiallyblackmedium.Rocknroll,abluesderivative,wasrhythmicdance

music.Folkmusic,oldandmodern,waspopularamongcollegestudents.Thethreeformsremainedmusicallyand

culturallydistinct,andevenaslateas1965,noneofthemwereexpressinganyradicallynewstatesof

consciousness.Bluesexpressedblacksoul;rockwasthebeatofyouthfulenergy;andfolkmusicexpressed

anti-warsentimentsaswellasloveandhope.
