peoplefromallovertheworld.Thecustomsandlanguagesoftheimmigrantsliveon
intheirnewhome.Thisdiversityofcultureisnotsurprisingwhenyouknowthe
historyofCalifornia.
NATIVEAMERCANS
ExactlywhenthefirstpeoplearrivedinwhatwenowknowasCalifornia,noone
reallyknows.However,itislikelythatNativeAmericanswerelivinginCaliforniaat
leastfifteenthousandyearsago.Scientistsbelievethatthesesettlerscrossedthe
BeringStraitintheArctictoAmericabymeansofalandbridgewhichexistedin
prehistorictimes.Inthe16thcentury,afterthearrivaloftheEuropeans,thenative
peoplesufferedgreatly.Thousandswerekilledorforcedintoslavery.Inaddition,
manydiedfromthediseasesbroughtbytheEuropeans.However,somesurvived
theseterribletimes,andtodaytherearemoreNativeAmericanslivinginCalifornia
thaninanyotherstate.
THESPANISH
Inthe18thcenturyCaliforniawasruledbySpain.Spanishsoldiersfirstarrivedin
SouthAmericaintheearly16thcentury,whentheyfoughtagainstthenativepeople
andtooktheirland.Twocenturieslater,theSpanishhadsettledinmostpartsof
SouthAmericaandalongthenorthwestcoastofwhatwenowcalltheUnitedStates.
OfthefirstSpanishtogotoCalifornia,themajoritywerereligiousmen,whose
ministrywastoteachtheCatholicreligiontothenatives.In1821,thepeopleof
MexicogainedtheirindependencefromSpain.Californiathenbecamepartof
Mexico.In1846theUnitedStatesdeclaredwaronMexico,andafterthewarwonby
theUSA,MexicohadtogiveCaliforniatotheUSA.However,thereisstillastrong
Spanishinfluenceinthestate.Thatiswhytodayover40ofCaliforniansspeak
