reports,whichtakeyearstoproduce．Governmentshavetosignoffonthem．Andthis

oneisjustthelatestbigreassessmentoftheclimatethattheIPCChasdone,but

itsthefirstonethatisdoneineightyears．Italsohastheclearest,most

confidentconclusionsthathaveeverbeenseeninanIPCCreport．

Accordingtothereport,thegreenhousegasesthatwehavealreadyputintothe

airhavewarmeduptheplanetsofarbyalmost2°Fcomparedtothepre-industrial

times．Thiswarmingtrendappearstobeacceleratingasthegreenhousegases

accumulateintheatmosphere．Andifwekeepburningfossilfuels,by2100—sowithin

thelifetimeofachildthatsborntoday—theplanetcouldbe5to7°Fhotter．

Andonenewthinginthisreportisthatittriestoputnumbersonwhatthat

means．So,forinstance,theysayheatwavessoextremeusedtoonlyhappenonce

every50years．Nowtheyrehappeningalmostfivetimesmoreoften．Extremedroughts

coulddoubleorfourtimesinfrequency．Insomecases,extremestormscouldbecome

threetimesmorefrequentanddrop30%morerainfallinaday．
