Thealgorithmreliedinpartonhowtheschool’sstudentshadhistoricallyfaredontheexam.Schoolswithricherchildrentendedtohavebettertrackrecords,sothealgorithmgavewealthystudents—eventhoseontrackforthesamegradesaspoorstudents—muchhigherpredictedscores.High-achieving,low-incomepupilswhoseschoolshadnotpreviouslyperformedwellwerehitparticularlyhard.Afterthreatsoflegalactionandwidespreaddemonstrations,thegovernmentbackeddownandcanceledthealgorithmicgradingprocessentirely.Thiswasn’tanisolatedincident:IntheUnitedStatessimilarissuestroubledtheInternationalBaccalaureateexam,whichusedanopaque(不透明的)artificialintelligencesystemtosetstudents’scores,promptingprotestsfromthousandsofstudentsandparents.

Theseepisodeshighlightsomeofthetrapsofalgorithmicdecision-making.Astechnologyadvances,companies,governments,andotherorganizationsareincreasinglyrelyingonalgorithmstopredictimportantsocialoutcomes,usingthemtodistributejobs,forecastcrime,andeventrytopreventchildabuse.Thesetechnologiespromisetoincreaseefficiency,enablemoretargetedpolicyintervention,andremovehumanimperfectionsfromdecision-makingprocesses.Butcriticsworrythatopaquemachinelearningsystemswillinfactreflectandfurtherkeepshortcomingsinhoworganizationstypicallyfunction—includingbyestablishingtheracial,class,andgenderprejudicesofthesocietiesthatdevelopthesesystems.
