Ilookedatthesteep,rockymountainaheadofmeandknewthatmystrengthhadabandonedme.Eventhefreshbeartrackspressedintherecentlyfallensnowfailedtomakemetakeanotherstep.Mytiredeyesmetmyfather’s,andIfelttooexhaustedfortears.“Leaveme.Seekhelp.Returnforme.Icannotmovemylegs,”Iutteredwearily.Earlierthatday,myfatherandIsetoffonabriefjourneyaccompaniedbymybrotherandafriendwhoactedasourguide.Ourcompanionhadassuredusthatitwouldbeaneffortlesstwohourhikingthroughanaturalenvironment.Wewereeagerandfilledwithanticipation.Havingspentthespring,summer,andearlyautumnhikinginthemountainswithmyfather,Ihadbeenconfidentthatthishikewouldpresentnodifficulties.

However,fromthestart,wefoundourselvesoverasnow-coveredridge,anditappearedrougherthanexpected.Astwohourspassedwithoutreachingourdestination,itbecameevidentthatourfriendhadmadeamistake.Wehadnotyetreachedthefalls,yetheinsistedthattheywerejustashortdistanceaway.Despitebeingaccompaniedbyfallingsnowandhowlingwinds,wepressedon.Bythetimewefinallyarrivedatthefalls,darknessandwearinesshadtakenholdofus.Nevertheless,wecouldn’thelpbutbefascinatedbythecharmingpink,green,andcopperasweobservedthegracefulfishswimminginitsnaturalhabitat.Aslateasitwas,wecouldonlyrestandenjoythesceneryforashortwhileinordertomakeitbacktothecarbeforedark.Ourfriendassuredusthatwe’dfindtherestofthehikeeasyandshort.However,itprovedtobeanythingbut.
