Hisdaughter,Melanie,wasextremelyworried.Shedrovetohishouseandpleaded,“Dad!Thisisn’tright.Youcan’tstayhere.Comelivewithus.”ButWaltershotbackangrily,“Idon’twanttoliveinyourhouse.I’mfine.Justleavemealone!”Melanieleft,herheartheavywithconcern.

Afewweekslater,WalterwalkedtothesupermarkettobuyhisusualTVdinnersandbread.Ashecrossedtheroad,hismindelsewhere,hedidn’tlookeitherway.Acarhithim,andanambulancerushedhimtothehospital.Atthehospital,Melanieexclaimed,“Dad!You’renotlivingaloneanymore.You’recomingtoourhouse.”Walter,weakanddefeated,finallyagreed.

AtMelanie’shouse,herhusbandRogerwasn’tpleased.“Yourfatherisdirtyandalwaysinabadmood.Whyishelivingwithus?”hecomplained.Melaniefirmlyreplied,“He’smyfather.He’soldandheartbroken.Heneedstostay.”Rogersighedandsaid,“Iunderstand.”

Rosa,MelanieandRoger’sdaughter,wasnineyearsold.OneeveningduringdinnerMelanieannounced,“Tomorrow,Rosa’sschoolhasGrandparent’sDay.”Walter,curious,asked,“What’sGrandparent’sDay?”Melanieexplained,“Thechildren’sgrandparentsvisittheschool,watchthekids’activities,andplaygameswiththem.It’sreallyfun.”Walterdeclared,“I’mRosa’sgrandfather.I’llgo.”Uponhearingthis,Rosajumpedup,rantoherroomandlockedherselfin.Laterthatnight,asWalterwasabouttogotobedandwalkedpastRosa’sroom,heheardhersobbing.ThenfollowedRoger’svoice,“Rosa,stopcrying.Grandpaisjustgoingthroughatoughtime.”
