ABSTRACT
FuShengLiuJi,orSixChaptersofaFloatingLife,isanautobiographicalprose
collectionbyShenFu,ascholaroftheQingDynasty,withitsfirstEnglishtranslation
byLinYutangremainingaclassictothisday.Despiteheproducingseveralrevised
editions,academicresearchhaspredominantlyfocusedonthebilingualversion
releaseddomesticallyin1939,withscantattentionpaidtothe1942versionpublished
intheUnitedStates.Thelatterversion,extensivelymodifiedfordiversecultural
contextsandreaderdemographics,holdssignificantresearchvalue.
Therefore,thisstudytakesLinYutang’srevisionasitsresearchsubject.By
comparingthedifferencesbetweenthe1939and1942translations,itsystematically
summarizesandcategorizesthecontentoftherevisionsandexploresthereasonsbehind
themfromthetheoreticalperspectiveofChesterman’stranslationnorms.Thisthesis
aimstoanswerthreeresearchquestions:(1)WhatdidLinYutangreviseinhistwo
versions?(2)Howcantherevisionsbecategorized?(3)Whydidthetranslatormake
theserevisions?
Thestudyutilizesbothquantitativeandqualitativeanalyses.Thequantitativepart
comparesmacro-differencesbetweenthetwotranslationsusingcorpustoolsand
readabilityanalysissoftware,whilethequalitativepartinvolvesclosereadingofthe
textstorecordallrevisionsforin-depthanalysisbasedonChesterman’stheory.The
researchidentified334revisionsbyLinYutangacrosslinguistic,cultural,and
interpretativedimensions.Linguisticrevisionsincludeorthographicvariation,lexical
choice,andsyntacticstructure;culturalrevisionspertaintothetranslationofdates,
titles,placenames,andotherculture-specificcontent;
