Thefamousdirectorofabigandexpensivemovieplannedtofilmabeautifulsunsetovertheocean,sothattheaudiencescouldseehisheroandheroineinfrontofitattheendofthefilmastheysaidgoodbyetoeachotherforever.Hesenthiscameracrewoutoneeveningtofilmthesunsetforhim.
Thenextmorninghesaidtothemen,“Haveyouprovidedmewiththatsunset?”
“No,sir,”themenanswered.
Thedirectorwasangry.“Whynot?”heasked.
“Well,sir,”oneofthemenanswered,“we’reontheeastcoasthere,andthesunsetsinthewest.Wecangetyouasunriseoverthesea,ifnecessary,butnotasunset.”
“ButIwantasunset!”thedirectorshouted.“Gototheairport,takethenextflighttothewestcoast,andgetone.”
Butthenayoungsecretaryhadanidea.“Whydon’tyouphotographasunrise,”shesuggested,“andthenplayitbackwards?Thenit’lllooklikeasunset.”
Thedirectorwaspleasedtohearthis.Thenheturnedtothecameracrewandsaid,“TomorrowmorningIwantyoutogetmeabeautifulsunriseoverthesea.”
Thecameracrewwentoutearlythenextmorningandfilmedabrightsunriseoverthebeachinthemiddleofabeautifulbay.Thenatnineo’clocktheytookittothedirector.“Hereitis,sir,”theysaid,andgaveittohim.Hewasverypleased.
Theyallwentintothestudio.“Allright,”thedirectorexplained,“nowourheroandheroinearegoingtosaygoodbye.Runthefilmbackwardssothatwecanseethe‘sunset’behindthem.”
The“sunset”began,butafteraquarterofaminute,thedirectorsuddenlyputhisfaceinhishandsandshoutedtothecameracrewtostop.
Thebirdsinthefilmwereflyingbackwards,andthewavesontheseaweregoingawayfromthebeach.
