Eachweek,thecoursewillhaveaparticularthemeorsubjectofinquiry,aspresentedbelow(inthe“ClassScheduleRequirements”section).Classeswillgenerallyfollowthefollowingformat:Afteranintroductionbytheteacher,thestudentswillscreenavideoclip—aTEDTalk-typelecture/speech,adocumentary,featurefilmorwebprogram,oranaudiobroadcast,podcastormusicvideo—eachonepre-screenedbytheteacherandchosenforthought-provokingintellectualcontentandacademicmerit.Afterward(or,inthecaseoflongerpresentations,during),theteacherwillleadanopendiscussionwithampleopportunityforthestudentstoquerytheteacheraboutanycontentorcontexttheydidnotunderstand.Inconjunctionwiththediscussion,theremayalsobeanexercise(eitherindividualorpairwork)inwhichthestudentswillgoovertheirthoughtsandnotesandprepareashortpresentationexplainingwhatinsightstheyvegatheredorally.Whenappropriate,saidpresentationwillbeassignedashomework,andtheresultsproducedinthefollowingclass.
InpreparationfortheadministrationoftheCollegeEnglishExam(EPTorotherstandardizedlisteningexam),theteachermayoccasionallyoversee—orassignforhomework—listeningexercisestakenfromthebookandMP3-audioseries,ListentoThis.Aftereachin-classexercisetheteacherwillreview,usingvisualaids,theanswerstoallthequestionsanddrills,pausingtogivelecturesandinciteinteractivediscussiononanygreatermattersrelatedtothecontent.
