ABSTRACT

ThisreportisanE-CtranslationofChapter3toChapter5selectedfromthe

bookCaptioningandSubtitlingford/DeafandHardofHearingAudiences.Inthese

threechapters,theauthorSoledadZárate,basedonherfirst-handexperienceof

captioningford/Deafandhardofhearingpeople,conductsadetaileddiscussionon

captioningandsubtitlingforthisgroupfromthreeaspects,namely,linguistic

considerations,technicalconsiderationsandspecificrequirements.Thebookisa

guideandfallsintothecategoryofinformativetext.Therefore,thetranslationshould

expresstheinformationandlogicoftheoriginalwithaccuracy,clarityandfluency.

Consideringthatselectedtextcontainsmanyterminologiesandlongsentences,

explicitation,atranslationtechnique,hasbeenadoptedtoproduceacleartranslation

andhelptargetreadersunderstandthetextmoreadequately.

ExplicitationwasfirstputforwardbyFrenchscholarsVinayandDarbelnetin

1958,whichreferstoconveyingexplicitlywhatisimplicitintheoriginal.Incase

analysis,Klaudy’sclassificationofexplicitationwhichincludesobligatory

explicitation,optionalexplicitationandpragmaticexplicitationisappliedasthe

analyticalframework.Aftertheanalysis,thereporthassummarizedspecificmethods

torealizeexplicitationinthetranslatedtext,suchasexplicitationoflogicrelations,

sentencerestructuringandadditionofin-textinformation,etc.

Thereporthasobservedthattheapplicationofexplicitationhelpsboostthe

accuracy,explicitnessandreadabilityofthetranslatedtext,whichisshowninthe

followingthreeperspectives.First,obligatoryexplicitationguaranteesa

grammaticallycorrecttranslationandimprovestheaccuracyoftargettext.Second,

optionalexplicitationisconducivetoproducelogicallyexplicitandnaturaltargettext.
