ABSTRACT

Atthebeginningofthe21stcentury,eco-translatologybyHuGengshenisaholistic

studythatutilizesthecharacteristicsofecologicalrationalityandtakesacomprehensiveview

oftranslationfromtheecologicalperspective.Inrecentyears,scholarsfromhomeandabroad

havecontinuouslystudiedandbroadenedeco-translatology,andhaveappliedittodifferent

typesoftexttranslation,especiallyliterarywork’stranslation.

TheGrapesofWrathisJohnSteinbeck’sclassicwork.Thenovelthathaswonthe

PulitzerPrizeintheUnitedStatesisofgreatsocialandhumanisticsignificance.However,

previousresearchonthenovelhasdiametricallyconcentratedontheperspectiveofliterary

criticismandtheintroductionoftranslationstudies.Fewpeoplehavesystematically

comparedandanalyzedthedifferenttranslationversionsofthenovelfromtheperspectiveof

eco-translatology.SincethepublicationoftheEnglishversionofTheGrapesofWrath,the

ChinesetranslationbyHuZhongchihasbeenregardedbyChinesereadersasaclassic

translationversionwiththefar-reachinginfluence.Asayoungtranslator,WangYifanhas

re-translatedTheGrapesofWrathinthecontextofanewera.Twotranslators’Chinese

versionsbothreflectadistinctiveepochalcharacter,whichprovidesafeasiblecomparative

studyforthethesis.

Thisthesisguidedbyeco-translatologyfocusesontheChinesetranslationversionsof

TheGrapesofWrathbyHuZhongchiandWangYifan.Thestudygroundedinthe

fundamentalconceptofselection/adaptation”initiatesitsexplorationthroughthe

three-dimensionaltransformationstheory.Thethesissystematicallycomparesthedistinct

ecologicaltranslationenvironmentsemployedbythetwotranslators,andexaminesthe

convergencesanddivergencesinlanguage,culture,andcommunicationwithintheir
