Abstract
Fromancienttimestothepresent,Chinahasconsistentlyadmiredthebeautyof
symmetry,andChinese,asacrucialelementoftraditionalChineseculture,naturally
incorporatesthisaestheticintoitslinguisticexpressions.Thesymmetrical
construction“dongXxiY”consistsoftwoparts,“dongX”and“xiY”,withXandY
sharingthesamesyllableandpartofspeech,orthesameorsimilarmeaning.
Symmetricalconstruction“dongXxiY”iswidelyusedindailycommunication
whilescholarshavestudieditextensivelyfromsyntactic,semantic,andpragmatic
perspectives,therearenotmanystudiesanalyzingthesymmetricalconstruction
“dongXxiY”fromacognitiveperspective.
Basedonthetheoryofconstructiongrammar,taking“dongXxiY”asthe
researchobject,thisthesissiftsthedatafromtheCorpusCenterofBeijingLanguage
andCultureUniversity(BCC)andconstructacognitiveanalysisframework.
Employingahybridapproachthatintegratesquantitative,qualitative,andinductive
analysismethods,acognitiveanalysisofthesymmetricalconstruction“dongXxiY”
ispresented,includingtheconstructioncoercioninitanditsconstructionalmeanings,
anditscognitivemotivationsarealsoexplained.Theaimistoprovideacognitive
explanationofthesymmetricalconstruction“dongXxiY”fromtheperspectiveof
constructiongrammar.
Themainfindingsareasfollows:firstly,atthelevelofform,thesymmetrical
construction“dongXxiY”suppressesthevariabletermsXandYthatenterthe
construction,containingthreemaincategoriesofconstructioncoercion:partof
speechcoercion,syllablecoercionandmeaningcoercion.Secondly,the
constructionalmeaningsofthesymmetricalconstruction“dongXxiY”areclassified
intotwocategories:polarconstructionalmeaningandcriticalconstructionalmeaning.
