Abstract.ApartlypreservedsquamationofTheloduslaevis(Pander)fromtheHimmisteoutcrop(SaaremaaIsland,Estonia)is

described.Mostofthetrunkwithapectoralfinfragmentandthreefragmentsofposteriorfinsarepresent,whilepartofthehead

andthecaudalfinareabsent.OntogeneticdevelopmentofthescalecoverofT.laevisisexplainedbycomparingitwiththe

squamationofLanarkiahorridaTraquair,Loganelliascotica(Traquair)andamodernfish.Itissupposedthatnewlyforming

trunkscalesofearlyjuvenileThelodusweresmoothandrhomboidal.Whentheindividualgrew,ridgedscaleswereadded

betweensmoothonesinirregularrowsintheposteriorpartofthetrunk.Adultindividualswerecoveredwithspecies-specific

scaleswithparticularmorphologyandsculptureofthecrown.Co-occurrenceofsmoothandridgedscalesonthetrunkinthe

specimenstudiedcorrespondstoayoungstageofontogeny.
